Born of Shadows, Raised in Riffs – A Gen X Lament

Born in the cursed year of ’68,
Big Brother now rests beneath silent stone,
His ghost still wails through Sabbath riffs,
Through the smoke-stained air of Led Zeppelin,
And the desperate anthems of Boston bleeding from busted speakers.

The ‘80s were a fever dream—
Blasting rebellion from rusted stereos,
We rode the doomwave of latchkey living,
In the backseat of a Ford Pinto deathtrap,
Where mortality had no seatbelt, and freedom had no brakes.

1983—Quiet Riot’s “Mental Health” cracked my young mind open.
That first album wasn’t just music—it was a diagnosis.
We survived on instinct,
Getting home before the streetlights called us back into the shadows.
Skateboards screamed down Whittier Boulevard
While Suicidal Tendencies tore through our skulls—
“All I wanted was a Pepsi!” became our war cry in the concrete jungle.

But this week…
This black week…
It struck deep.

A grim whisper crawled down my spine—
That truth no child of the darkness wants to admit:
The Boomers are fading into ash...
And we—Generation X—stand next in line.

I told my son—my blood, a Marine forged in fire—
And he begged me not to speak in funeral tones.
He called me on July 22nd,
Just to hear the sound of my breath…
To make sure the reaper hadn’t come.

So to my fellow Gen X - brothers and sisters,
Those haunted by CRT static and neon dreams,
Who carry cassette scars and Walkman souls—
Lift your heads, warriors.
We are not done.

Our mission is far from over—
Our children and their children need the echoes of our agony and strength.
And maybe… just maybe…
One day they’ll understand the ghosts that made us.

We were carved from concrete.
We grew up on glass and smoke.
We buried our feelings because survival demanded silence.
Love was rare. Pain was expected. Trust was earned in blood.

But here’s the final truth:
Most of us LIVED.
Not just existed—but lived like fire in the rain.

This is the way.
The dark way.
The Gen X way.

For those who remember, and those brave enough to carry it forward.

I Salute You!....
